Our second day in D.C., Wim and the big kids headed back to the National Mall Area
to visit some more museums while the girls and I headed to the National Zoo.
It is a much bigger zoo than the one we usually go to near our home.
There were lots of outside exhibits as well as several large buildings with exhibits inside.
Inside the Small Mammal building,
this cute little Meercat seemed to be playing with Josie and Clara Rose.
There were Gibbons in an outside area.

The large cat area-- a Bengal Tiger in the background getting a nice long drink of water.
Clara Rose thought it was a little stinky.
Some kind of bear in the background--
It was hard for me to really read names of the animals.
The girls were pretty happy, excited, and all over the place so
I had my hands full keeping tabs on them!
The Asian Elephant Section.
Nothing better at the zoo than a whole area
dedicated to Poop!
Clara Rose is centrifuging poop while
Josie reads the directions and bosses instructs her.
There was also a Bird House with an open air section inside that was
accessible both on the lower and upper floor.
After the whole butterfly thing, I wasn't too sure, but we went in and guess what . . .
Birds aren't bugs so apparently they are OK
to being flying around one's head.

They are also holding their vacation souvenirs--
Clara chose a baby seal (we saw a show at the zoo as well)
and Josie found a Red Panda.
Then we wandered upon this guy (or girl).
No, this was not part of the open air area.
It is a Cassowary and what a sight!
We got a big kick out of him!
Josie tried to get a picture but
by the time I snapped the picture all we got
was a few tail feathers behind Josie.
Next up an Emu.
She was more than happy to
pose for a picture!
The reptile house was interesting--
There is an alligator in the background.
It was also creepy-- they had a very large Anaconda.
There was also A Komodo Dragon!
You can't really see him in the shot with the girls,
but he is quite huge-- bigger than Josie!
We had a fun day at the zoo checking out so many neat new animals.
Back in our little home away from home, the girls and I settled in
with some snacks, a few crafts and chilled out for the night.
